An ancient, ever-evolving dance, the bellydance unites women throughout time and space. Like the very women who dance, bellydance itself is mysterious and often misunderstood- it is both sensual and strong, both primal and sequined. Many manifestations of this ancient communion have developed around the world, each vividly painted by the culture in which the dancers live and move. One thing remains true throughout: dancing bellydance is even more of an extraordinarily wonderful experience than watching it! Bellydance unites the dancer with the divine complexities of music, muscles and self.
This class is for those who dream of exploring:
~fundamental movements of the bellydance
~unique dance sequences
~development of personal style
~confident improvisation

The class will also include:

~yoga and stretch/strength/tone exercises
~music exploration
~herstory of the dance

The night begins at 5 pm with our gallery opening of visual artists including the entrants of the e(art)h competition a project joining UH Manoa and local elementary school students, and a one of a kind live art (body painting) Exhibit by local phenomenon Erin Paris.

At 9:15 our live performances begin with the return of SEGUYN and his Sun Drum Village Ensemble followed by two local dance troops; Giinko Marischino and Brena Rose featuring the Opu dance crew. Giinko Marschino which has become a First Friday staple at Ong King never ceases to amaze with their innovative combination of neo-modern dance and Japanese Butoh. Brena Rose (Ong King’s bellydance instructor) will collaborate with members of the Quadraphonix.

Our headline band will be local Ska, reggae band BLACK SQUARE who is sure to get the place dancing. Rounding out the night is local funk band the Quadraphonix which needs no introduction.

The night will also include a performance by Hawaii Underground Theatre Collective (HUTC) and the award winning Youth Speaks.

VISUAL ARTISTS:

ERIN PARIS

Erin Paris presents a fantastic display of Face and body painting. Her canvas will be the body. At 16 She was the youngest artist to be employed at disney world. Her installation will include various different models which will be interactive with both patrons and the artist. Erin’s work has been seen through her children’s parties entitled “faces of paradise”, her work was also featured in the gung fu theatre. Erin calls her work “live art” as her piece will feature live painting and live canvases. Her models will later be featured in a live body painting show later in the evening.

“What is sustainability? Sustainability is a word we use to describe the process in which we return to simplicity. It is based on a universal idea that already exists in other phrases and words such as “think globally, act locally” or “ecological.” Sustainability nurtures a belief that change and evolution begins with individual action; we are all connected to and affect each other. Ultimately a sustainable awareness flourishes as an attitude amongst people connected to their communities and the land.

The e(art)h competition was created by the H.U.B. (Help Us Bridge), a passionate and optimistic group of UHM students, dedicated to transform the University of Hawai’i into a world leader in sustainability. Our mission is to ultimately connect with UHM and the community of Hawai’i so that our united efforts can magnify and accelerate change.

Performances:

SEGUYN

Master Drummer Seguyn is a world renowned percussionist who has been playing on the international scene since 1960. His innovative style which includes African, Caribbean, and Latin American make him one of the most unique drummers to perform in Hawaii. Seguyn has played with various artists and performers to include: Don Alias, Van Morrison, Miroslav Bitous, Zachary Richards (Cajun musician) and legendary African masters Olatunji, DouDouNdiaye Rose, and Hawaii’s own Taiko master drummer Kenny Endo. His most notable contribution to the Hawaii drum scene was the explosive performances of the Sun Drum Village Djembe Ensemble. Don’t miss Sequyn’s last performance here in Honolulu as he is set to return to his home in Canada.

Black Square

Black Square has been one of the most steadily evolving and exciting bands on Oahu over the last four years. They started as a trio in the underground 808 scene, gigging extensively and honing their sound. Adding a horn section in 2004 has furthered their musical evolvement while they retaining their social focus. The band has incorporated their diverse influences, ranging from reggae to ska to punk, and produced a sound unique to them. Josh86’s superior songwriting talent has lead the band towards growing recognition. The release of their second cd this winter, “One Glass of Water” coincided with their first mainland tour. The album features songs covering such diverse concerns as teenage homelessness, globalization, militarization, and the Japanese internment camps during WWII. The band is going to the mainland again this summer and will being work on their third album shortly. Black Square currently consists of Josh86 on guitar, Nick Danger on Bass, Little Brian Kim on drums, T.R. on sax, and G-Bone on the T-bone, and Babyface McEvan on tenor sax.

GIINKO MARISCHINO

Creative visionary Malia Oliver has been trained extensively in various forms of creative dance with an emphasis on the meditative form of dance from Japan called Butoh. She has experience with Iona Dance company and various other companies from L.A. and San Francisco. Malia brings her directing experience to Giinko Marischino. Giinko’s style includes a combination of modern dance, comedy and eclectic visions.

Bryna Rose and Opu Dance Crew

Bryna Rose has been teaching bellydance at Ong King for over a year, she has extensive training in bellydance and modern jazz. A former member of Shakti dance Bryna has formed her own dance ensemble which features combinations of bellydance with aspects of street dancing.

The Cherry Blossom Burlesque

BURLESQUE: THE Cherry Blossom Burlesque, the audience favorite returns! Since its inception at ong king only 9 months ago this group has gained in popularity and diversified its style. Headlining shows at NExt Door, and o Lounge, has added collaboration and show creation to its broad range of talents.

Erotic Rope Bondage with Lee “Bridgett” Harrington

Honolulu, HI – On Saturday, April 28th, Lee “Bridgett” Harrington will be conducting two erotic rope bondage classes and hosting an erotic after party at Ong King Arts Center in Chinatown (184 North King Street). Pre-registration is highly encouraged. 18+ with ID.

The day’s first class, “Introduction to Asian Aesthetic Bondage,” will focus on the basic ties and methodology needed to begin creating Shibari inspired ropework. Shibari (or more accurately, Shin Nawa, the new way of rope, the term for folks outside of Japan doing Shibari style work) is a practice combining martial arts, meditation, torture, and erotic passion. Lee will cover column ties, chest harnesses, crotch ropes, and the mischievous mindset needed to incorporate these key elements in your play. The inquisitive are encouraged to bring at least two pieces of rope, 15-30ft in length and 6-8mm in diameter, to this hands-on class held from 2 to 4pm.

“Erotic Macramé: Creative Decorative Bondage” is the partner class to the ties taught in the afternoon. From rope corsets to creative full-body harnesses to beautifully applied rump bindings, Lee will present ways to turn yourself or your partner into pure bound passion. Attending the first class is not necessary to enjoying the second, as only two knots will be repeated. Again, bring at least two pieces of rope to this hands-on class held from 7 to 8:30pm. Limited rope will be available on hand for folks who have none.

The erotic play and dance party immediately following will be open to all, including those unable to attend the classes. Lee will be on hand to assist party-goers with their new, sexy bondage skills, discuss erotic theory, or to just share a snack with. Spinning from 9pm to 2am in the main room will be DJs Monkey, Jason Silingo, and Nocturna. The limited advance admission price for all three events is $50.00, or $20.00 for each separately. The Genie is an avant-garde guitarist, performer, and musical pioneer who first exploded onto the music scene in the summer of 2002 in Montreal Canada. Creating a totally new performance art which he dubbed scratch guitar, The Genie blends blues, hip hop, reggae, drum n’ bass, middle eastern rhythms, bossa nova, and jazz via slide guitar, live-sampling, beat boxing, and unconventional syncopation to create a visually stunning, unique, and soulful performance.

Q: Saturated with energy, innovativeness, and presence, Quentin Talley, also known as “Q”, is a member of the 2005 & ’06 Slam Charlotte, North Carolina, Poetry Team, which placed 2nd in 2005 at IWPS, where in 2006 he placed 12th for his individual poetry. Q rocks the theatre stages and the poetry slams. He has directed several plays in the city of Charlotte, funded by a grant issued from the Arts and Science Council, all of which aim to spotlight African American playwrights.

?:The other poet is a secret, suffice to mention he is a National Poetry Slam Champion, an HBO’s Def Poetry Jam regular. And an all around nice person.

The Amazing TJ, is leaving the island, this is his farewell performance. His juggling, chin balancing and charm have made him a true crowd favorite, he will be missed.

POEt and Dancer COMbine: Jamie of IONA Dance Company and Lyz Soto (3X First Thursday Champion) have melded their talents. They will perform an original, deeply personal story.
