April First Friday at Ong King focuses on Art in Motion. Come let Mighty Mike McGee, Ishle Yi Park, and Carlyn Arteaga move your soul through their spoken word. A dance performance from the Celebrity Project, as well as hula hooping from renowned Spiralfire will inspire you. Comedians Fox Force 5 will get you rolling. The music of Family Dinner, Underwater Radar, and Shayla Kaai will get your body goin. Guest DJs, live art by Rio Gordon, body painting by Daniel Morris, and a few surprises we have up our sleeve will definitely get under your skin.

DOPE artists this month. Daniel Morris’ Painted Ladies collection, Pua Logan‘s Around the Lands of Lunamare series, and Allyn Fetherolf‘s incredible photography.

Shayla Kaai is an original singer-songwriter born and raised on the island of Oahu in the beautiful state of Hawaii. Formally the brains behind indie progressive-alternative band Barefoot Samurai, Shayla has since been working on her solo indie acoustic project since the fall of 2008. Her set ranges from punchy guitar-driven funk songs to lyrically dense yet simply diverse folk songs – all lead by her unique vocal style and delivery. You’re sure to be questioning your existence and hugging your non-existing child by the end of her set!

This First Friday’s theme at Ong King is LIVING ART.  Art isn’t this giant that lives in the sky—you can feel it, wear it, walk in it, hear it, touch it, and taste it.  We’re gonna surround you with down-on-earth ethereal acts of art.  Fire dancing, incredible music, spoken word, face painting, live portraiture, and aerial performances are all a part of this Friday’s line up @ Ong King, 184 N King Street, starting at 9 p.m.

Wearable art by Melissa Rivera of Unleash Studios and newcomer Rae Bastoni, as well as visual art by Anna Lisa, and Michael Daly.  Michael will also be doing live portraiture for us, so come early and be made into lasting art.  Jessica Picone and will make your body a canvas with face painting.

Spoken word artists Harrison Ines & Jocelyn Ng (International Slam Champions!), and Ishle Yi Park (Def Poet, Laureate of Queens) embody the artful life, and will let us into their world. Students from the renowned Samadhi School will bless us by literally performing art mid-air. Setting the celebration ablaze will be members from Hawai’i Fire Artists.

Live music from soulful newcomer Chas Hays, crowd favorite Paul Izak and Shazam (aka Garlozah), and bands Product and Breath of Fire are bound to get you dancin.  Jonny Kashola will join our very own Shain onstage to MC.  All of this and more at Ong King Art Center to remind you: Living is art.
