The 4th. almost annual 50/50 show at Ong-King is here, and it gets bigger every year.  The crew will be there early, with live art: painting, turntables, etc., from 5 to close.

The Proff. returns from a lengthy gallery tour of Holland and southern Spain. He will be exhibiting new photos from his portfolio of portraits, event photography, and extreme sports, as well as some sculptures, including blown glass.

Denali Foley

Will be representing the 50/50 group Between Oahu and Big Island. This will be D’s 5^th show with 50/50. He’s also been designing graphics for Stab-n-Grab, Sequence and the Aurora project.  He will be premiering new pieces ranging from cartoon characters to landscapes on everything from found art to paper-mache’ and models. Using a variety of mediums Denali pieces will be something you don’t want to miss.

Dan  “the man” Madison

Known to oahu socialites as AB-from 50/50 group, Dan is sponsored exclusively  by Oasis skateboards!.. The fine artist and skateboard designer turned director/digital editor will be traveling from the big island to feature his new pieces as a well as several in house painted murals and a video premier.

Taking on the performance portion of the First Friday 50/50 will be featuring the musical stylings of:

Dj Quelz

Known for spinning underground and local hip-hop Dj Quelz will be turning it up on the tables here at Ong.  Originally from Alaska, he performs regularly in Oahu, moving crowds with his brand of beat juggling, scratches, blends and cuts!

Kava

Ah yes the mysterious brown drink we serve at all First Fridays and Open Mic Sundays. Kava or awa in Hawaiian is a drink made from the roots and stems of the plant and is mostly found throughout the cultures of Polynesia. Traditionally kava was drunk during times of ceremony and celebration. 

The effects of Kava are known to be medicinal and soothing.  It helps to ease stressed minds and calm nerves. The drink  is also said to be great for the “blues” because it brings on a happy, tranquil state while keeping your mind alert and your body relaxed.

Ready to try some??

 Well lucky for you Ong King happens to be one of only a few Kava (Awa) Bars in Hawaii and with a deal like $5 dollars all you can drink, you really can’t beat it. Add a little coconut milk to the mix and you’re on your way to a good night.

It’s that time again my friends. Ong King is gearing up to host yet another amazing First Friday Extravaganza.  As you know we are in our fifth month of revival and this isn’t an event you’re going to want to miss!

Tuesday March 9th the Insomniacs Artists club will begin hosting their weekly salon here at Ong King from 11pm-2am.

Not sure what a salon is well…

I”ll let Rachel Knight, the founder of the Insomniacs Artists Club explain.

“There is a long, rich history behind salons, dating back to the Greek symposiums of Plato’s time if not further. For more information, I recommend Utne Reader’s book on the subject. I myself first learned about salons in high school while studying frequent salon attendee Voltaire.

The INSOMNIAC ARTISTS CLUB is an idea in utero. It is difficult to say exactly what it will be like, because a.) we have not officially met yet, and b.) I refuse to monopolize the atmosphere. This will be a creative collaborative of gorgeous minds, together figuring out what the INSOMNIAC ARTISTS CLUB is and does.

Every week the group starts with a warm-up activity, designed to create and share on a collaborative level. These warm-ups will likely include, over time, a ‘page party’ where each attendee makes a page for a zine, a hippie-style clothing swap, surrealist games, and a poetry slam.

The first week’s warm-up is Show & Tell. I used to lead a weekly Show & Tell group/salon at a liberal arts college in New England, and it was a grand experience for all involved. I like to call it ‘a kindergarten practice at the adult level.’ It’s exactly what you think it is. Bring in something that is important to you or otherwise interesting, and be prepared to tell the club about it.”
