FeAture ArtIST: JOHN ELLIOT Artist, muralist and surfer - are all important monikers when describing John Elliott and his art. He’s managed to fuse all these identities cohesively into his work - large format art pieces that communicate the power and natural beauty of Hawai‘i’s waves but with a unique “surfer’s-eye view.” So, don’t expect simply pretty waves as they are seen from shore - these are from right inside the barrel itself.

Elliott produces a variety of 4’ x 5’ and 3’ and 4’ (and some smaller) single wave paintings notable for vibrant blues, greens, reds and yellows, and he frequently plays with and amplifies the natural geometries of the wave.
Many of Elliott’s pieces aren’t simply from memory - he’s an active water photographer and can often be found taking photos with a specially designed underwater housing while bodysurfing around the island to ensure his “surfers-eye” perspective. When he finds a photo that is particularly interesting, he paints it.
From a massive, powerful wave in vibrant blues and greens; to a painting of a wave with circular water spots that might be seen from a photo; to a rolling wave with an interesting perspective of land, each piece is as unique and natural as a wave.
Much of Elliott’s work - including its size - is due to his background and work as a muralist. He holds a degree in Visual and Public Art from Cal State Monterey and has produced murals in California, Hawai‘i, Boston and Israel. Two of his murals are in Honolulu, and can be seen at the entrance to the Ong King Arts Center.

SLAM POETRY: Youth SPeaks HawAii. Just a week ago Youth Speaks Hawaii….

WON the 2008 Brave New Voices International Poetry Competition in Washington, DC!!!

(Washington, DC) – On Saturday, July 19, at the Lincoln Theater, the five finalist youth poetry teams competed for the Grand Slam championship of Youth Speaks’ Brave New Voices, the 11th annual international youth poetry slam festival.

The five finalist teams were: Youth Speaks Hawaii (Honolulu, Hawaii) – winner;
Urban Word NYC (New York City, NY) –2nd place; Young Chicago Authors (Chicago, IL)—3rd place; Slam High (Rochester, NY)—4th place; and Philadelphia’s Youth Poetry Movement (Philadelphia, PA)—5th place.

The event was filmed live for HBO’s Teen Poetry Series, a 6-part documentary series that will air in the coming year. While HBO’s cameras rolled, projecting a live-feed to the hundreds of teen audience members in the upper balcony, the five finalist teams put on quite a show, bringing even Youth Speaks’ artistic director, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, to tears onstage. Judges included: Sonia Sanchez, legendary poet of the Black Arts movement; Miguel Algarin, founder of Nuyorican Poets Café in NYC; Joy Harjo, esteemed Native American poet; Adam Mansbach, author and poet; and Ishle Yi Park, Poet Laureate of Queens, NY.

Youth Speaks is a national non-profit organization started in San Francisco in 1996, dedicated towards building the next generation of leaders through both written and spoken word poetry.

Youth Speaks Hawai`i (YSH) is the Hawai`i branch of Youth Speaks, founded by Kealoha of the HawaiiSlam movement (the same organization that hosts First Thursdays, the largest slam poetry competition in the world). We encourage youth to find their own avenues toward creative self-expression, and embrace the collaborative nature of group dynamics and peer-to-peer education. By coupling public performance and publication opportunities with educational workshops, mentoring programs, and cooperative learning, YSH encourages active literacy, honest writing, and critical thought.

YSH FREE workshops happen every Wednesday at The Arts at Marks Garage from 4-5:30pm. The address is 1159 Nu`uanu Avenue (@ Pauahi St) in downtown Honolulu.

HAWAII NPN/NCCC Artist Performance Residency
WORKSHOP 6-8PM
PERFORMANCE 8-10PM

iyeoka and b. cap

Embracing the power of words from writers such as Sonia Sanchez, Patricia Smith and Alice Walker, Iyeoka is a powerful songstress whose lyrical prowess invokes the spirit of the renowned soul-shaker Nina Simone. She will strongly represent the quality and creativity that the NPN/NCCC artist in residency program is striving for. The buzz surrounding her “poem-songs” has garnered her national attention through performances at the TBS Trumpet Awards, and Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam airing on HBO. Iyeoka also has opened for the Tony Award winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway tour at Boston’s Colonial Theater. Sharing the stage with recording artists Chuck D of Public Enemy, Musiq Soul Child and Vivian Greene to poets Gil Scot Heron, Sonia Sanchez, Saul Williams and Amiri Baraka — Iyeoka has more than held her own. A story teller to the core, her poems build momentum touching on a wide range of identity and social justice issues. Iyeoka emerged as one of the nation’s premiere slam poets since 2000 at the National Poetry Slam. She is acclaimed for her work with the Blackout Arts Collectives and her recordings on two Lps “Black and Blues” (Phanai Records, 2004) and “Next on the Mic” (Rounder Records, 2007).

This program is supported in part by a grant from the National Performance Network and the Network of Cultural Centers of Color’s Artist of Color Performance Residency Program. Major contributors of the National Performance Network include the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency), and the Nathan Cummings Foundation. FIRST FRIDAY: June 6 at Ong King Arts Center

Art becomes us, we become art, so thus this night, day, event, celebration, declaration, cyclical brake from the norm dawns. International super artist Jasper WOng, leads the visuaL art trio including Erin McCullough and MOCHee. GiinKO marachino retuRns, with a branD new piece of BUtoh Dance entitled ‘coexist.’ Music begins with CuBAN DRUM ensemble led by ELI Clemens, then it is the FUnk Flavor from FiSH ouT of WatER, plus fresh off their IONA run the ever evolving QUAdraphoNIX (with Taimane Gardener?). JuggLer-stILT waLKER: MoCo LOcO is here. Hawaii SLam’s Newest Member TUi ScanLan speaks poetry. art becomes uS, we become art, thus….

FeAture ArtIST: JASPER wONG During the 1980’s the Chinese government attempted to create their very own slanty-eyed Communist-loving Hulk Hogan. However, the experiment failed, and Jasper Wong was thus born. As a small child, Jasper spent much of his time attempting to grow chest hair through mental telepathy and Kung Fu chopping small babies with his dainty Asian fists. As years passed, he learned to accept his genetic hairless deformities, and instead focused his time drawing portraits of the A-Team.

Today, Jasper Wong has a frosty illustration style that developed around an odd and unhealthy obsession with the color pink, Mr. T, and magical laser beams. Yet somehow it all combines into his own unique clash of Asian-influenced pop culture on paper. Jasper has had shows in Japan, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, New York, France, London, Chicago and now Hawaii and has recently been selected by Archive magazine as one of the 200 Best Illustrators worldwide.

He has also been featured in prestigious art publications such as Communication Arts, Society of Illustrators, and American illustration.

More fluffy pink goodies for your viewing pleasure can be found at

EMERGING ARTIST: mochee has experienced many fantastic achievements in the creative profession and she is thankful for the journey that has led her here to this moment. Her elegant refined technique is leading to this unique collaboration with Jasper WOng. mochee creates art to create harmonious situations inside.

For it’s here and now that she is attempting to manifest the intangible “Atman” with a bit of imagination as she moves through the unknown.

FEATURE ARTIST #2: Erin McCullough is one if ong king’s most cherished inspirations. In 07 she graced oNG kinG with a full show, and she displayed new works in both anniversary shows. Erin now turns her focus to the small space to create a unique environment, consisting of custom tables, and more tangible reflective art. Erin has been producing art in the Hawaiian Islands for the past eight years. Sadly this may be her last show at ong king for some time, as she is retuning to the east coast. Erin has also been a featured artist on several occasions at the First Thursdays Poetry Slam.

DANCE: GIINKO MARISCHINO,
presents an excerpt from…..COEXIST
in Co-EXisT, Giinko Marischino explores the complicated themes of war, peace and the state of humanity.

The collective of dancers embrace the opportunity to explore various and diverging responses to living in our current times of conflict and unrest. With dark imagery, humor, irony and optimistic intent, COEXIST is a call to uplift the state of humanity in our contemporary times…….How can we Coexist?

Giinko Marichino, a dance collective created in the mid 1990’s by the trio of Sami LA Akuna aka Cocoa Chandelier, Summer Partlon and Malia Oliver. GIINKO was created and developed in the underground night club scene, and remains true to its approach to dance as raw living art. Blending humor and entertainment with the sensual and the spiritual realms, GIINKO is a feast for all senses.

Sebastian Hughes: began his musical adventures with a classical background, taking violin lessons at the age of 5. He was given a guitar at age 14 and fell in love with it. Now at age 18, this self taught
guitarist has branched out to also singing, playing bass, drums, uke, and piano, to composing instrumental pieces and writing songs, and to producing and recording his original works. Like so many others, music is what he is most passionate about. Sebastian performs solo on the acoustic steel string guitar and vocals, performing original songs.

PebaLuna is repesented by Lauren, her amazing voice and chill vibes make you wish she was in town for more than a month. She recently went on a song writting rampage with a new lullybye, she is at www.myspace.com/pebaluna

SLAM POET: Tui Scanlan triumphed at the Grand SLam FInals and became a member of the Hawaii National Slam team, set to compete on the National stage in August. His poetry bursts open truths universal, and personal. Only two years ago Tui was in a stagnant pool of wanna-be stars on the mainland, Orange County. He had to come home to the story of this land, he wanted to tell stories with meaning, “slam is one of the last few places where you are face to face, the sound waves touch you, you and the audience create as your reaction, it’s the last pure communication.”

Circuit Bending Workshop with Beatrix*Jar

TIME: May 25th SUnDay 2-4 pm
PLACE: oNG kING ARTS CENTEr,
honolulu-CHINAtowN
184 NORTH kiNG st. (near RivER St)
worKshop contact: 780-5131l charlesgum@gmail.com

DEMO:
CircuitBendingSS

Circuit bending is a do-it-yourself sound art, which allows one to discover new hidden organic sounds in battery-powered electronic toys recycled from homes, thrift stores and garage sales. Students will be introduced to the notion of non-traditional instruments and they will have the opportunity to take a hands-on approach to circuit bending. They will interact with electronic toys, learn about circuit boards, discover new sounds and install on/off switches. They will also be given the opportunity to drill, solder and use tools like screwdrivers and wire cutters.

Students are given an explanation of what circuit bending is and a brief history. They discuss how circuit benders recycle children’s toys to create unique new sounds. Students are then introduced to a circuit bent keyboard. The keyboard is demonstrated with normal sounds and then with circuit bent sounds.

TECHNIQUE (15 minutes)
Beatrix*JAR discuss Circuit Bending Safety.

The keyboard is opened up and they are given an explanation about how they can locate new sounds (sonic shortcuts) on the circuit board inside the keyboard.

A. Explain circuit-bending metaphor: “City of Casio” - roads and cul-de-sacs that make up the city.
B. Open machine.
C. Students are shown the circuit board of the keyboard.
D. Explain how to find new and unusual sounds by taking “shortcuts” or “detours” in the Casio city.
E. Introduce tools: alligator clips and wires, as a means of connecting these sounds and paint-pens as a means to mark the sounds for future use.

EXPLORATION (30 minutes)
Students are given the rest of the time to open up machines and find different sounds or “sonic shortcuts”. The instructors will walk around and answer questions or help students that are lost.

CHECK IN / PART TWO (5 minutes)
Part two begins with a review of the student’s experiences. Students are asked about what they learned and their feelings and experiences with finding sounds.

TECHNIQUE (Part 2) (15 minutes)
Students are taught how to solder the points they discovered, attach wires, solder an on/off switch to the wires and mount the on/off switch to the outside of the machine. They are introduced to the tools that they will need to use for circuit bending (soldering station, drill, helping hands, on/off switches and the digital multimeter).

EXPLORATION (20 minutes)
A. Students may visit soldering station and learn how to solder a wire in place.
B. Students may continue exploring sounds in groups or individually.
C. Students may choose install on/off switches.
D. Students who are having difficulty will work one on one with one of the instructors to find sounds.

WRAP UP and CLEAN UP (10 minutes)
Students are invited to discuss their experiences at the workshop.
Students who install switches are invited to “Show and Tell”.
Students help instructor’s cleanup area before ending class.

CURRICULUM AND THEAMATIC CONNECTIONS

Sound Art/Music History: Students will be creating music in an indeterminate and experimental fashion as many sound artists have in the past. Groups like the Fluxus, Futurists and Dadaists can be referenced as well as artists like John Cage, an American experimental music composer, Leon Theremin, creator of the Theremin, and Robert Moog, inventor of the Moog synthesizer and pioneer of electronic music.

Afro-Brazilian Martial Arts “Capoeira”
by Capoeira Cordao de Ouro Hawaii (Instrutor Duas)

capoeira de ouro @ ong king

place: ong kiNg arts cenTer
184 North King St.

Day: Wednesdays
Time: 8:00pm - 10:30pm
Level: Mixed - Beginners Welcome!

About Capoeira: Capoeira is a blend of martial art, game, and dance originated in Brazil, from the regions known as Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo. The art-form started up in Brazil during the 16th Century, an obvious result of the slave trading that took place in conjunction with the previously slaved native indians. Capoeira was created and developed by both the native slave Indians in Brazil and slaves brought from Africa. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts.

Our Group: Cordão de Ouro means “the belt of gold”. The name Cordão de Ouro was created by the founder of the group in Brazil. Mestre Suassuna, one of the biggest names in capoeira worldwide.

Our classes are consisted of:

Capoeira Angola
Capoeira Regional
Miudinho
Maculele (Stick dance-fight)
Music Class - Berimbau, Pandeiro (Tambourine), Atabaque, etc.
and much more…

Instructor Duas

Originally from Minas Gerais in Brazil, he has been training Capoeira for 14 years. He holds an “instrutor” belt from Contra-Mestre Fuinho of Cordao de Ouro group. His detail-oriented style of teaching helps non-Brazilians & Brazilians alike to reach the higher level of proficiency in the art of Capoeira.
